Synopsis

Langtang Gosaikunda and Helambu trekking is a great trekking trail in Nepal to explore the well-known three major places including Langtang valley, Gosainkunda lake and Helambu valley. Gosainkunda is a glacier lake that lies to the north of Kathmandu. The thinly populated area has many other glaciers adjoining the famous Gosainkunda. The Hindu legend says the sacred lake of Gosainkunda (4200 m) was created by Lord Shiva when he stabbed his Trishula (trident) into a mountain to extract cold water to soothe his burning throat after drinking poison. A large rock in the center of the lake is said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine, where people often claim of seeing the image of Mahadev. The lake of Gosainkunda (Gosain meaning monk and Kunda meaning pool) is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims who come here to take holy bath in the full moon night (purnima) of August.

The trek to Gosainkunda gives stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu and Annapurna mountain range along with an exploration through dense forests teaming with wild flowers and animal species. After passing Gosainkunda, the trek ascends a moderately challenging Lauribina-La Pass (4610m) and enters Helambu valley. The trek gives trekkers the opportunity to witness the unique lifestyle of Tamang and Yolmo Sherpa people of this region who physically and culturally resemble the Tibetans.
